HOW TO CARE FOR NATURALLY DYED FABRIC

HOW TO CARE FOR NATURALLY DYED FABRIC

Everything in our NATURAL DYE collection has been hand dyed with plants by us in our sunlit Victoria studio. We use dried plant extracts and zero chemicals or plastics in the dyeing process––wooden spoons, upcyled elastic bands from veggies, an aluminum pot instead of powdered alum and homemade soya milk as a mordant.

The beauty of natural dyeing is that each item––even from the same dye pot––is totally unique and impossible to duplicate. Variations in colour such as streaks, patches or bright spots of dye are an intrinsic part of the process. Natural dye has a mind of its own, and changes over time with each wear and wash. The colour life span of a naturally dyed item can be extended by taking a little extra care.

Don't let that daunt you, caring for your naturally dyed item is very similar to caring for conventionally dyed clothing. You can wear it and wash it like any other piece of clothing but to encourage the item to live a long and colourful life, follow these instructions...

  • Wash on a gentle cycle.
  • Use a mild––plant based if possible––pH-neutral laundry soap.
  • Avoid using fabric softeners.
  • Dry at low temperature in the dryer, or hang dry away from direct sunlight.
  • Store plant dyed items out of direct sunlight.

Following this advice means your plant-dyed apparel will live a long and colourful life! If your naturally dyed garment has faded over time, and you'd love a colour refresh, check out our (RE)DYE PROGRAM.
